Developed in the late 1970′s, the Georgia Forensic Coaches Association was created to compete with the State Literary Coaches Association, who had a lot of influence with the Georgia High School Association at the time.
Coaches such as Bruce Rogers of Northside, Philip Wertz of Thomas County Central, Paula Nettles of Parkview, Tony Anderson of Peachtree, and Sandra Silvers of Calhoun led the creation of our organization. The leadership of the GFCA throughout the years has been instrumental in becoming the governing body for Georgia High School Speech & Debate. Georgia High Schools comprise some of the best debaters in the nation, winning twenty three national championships.
Every year, the GFCA holds two State Championships- one dedicated to the Varsity division and another dedicated to First & Second Year debaters. Since 2002, the GFCA has awarded 186 State Championships. Every year, 31 additional State Champions are added.
Every year, the GFCA awards two Coach of The Year awards, one for Speech and one for Debate. Last Year’s Coach of the Year winners were Bill Swafford of Lee County High School and Jeffrey Miller of Marist School.
The GFCA holds a Hall of Fame and induct coaches, debaters, and persons involved with Georgia Debate every other year. Last year’s inductee was Jim Wade of Milton High School.
