Isabelle Taft sweeps George Mason RR and Tournament

Henry W. Grady High School junior Isabelle Taft won the George Mason Extemporaneous Speaking Round Robin this past weekend and then followed it up with a win at the regular tournament.   For more about Isabelle’s win, read Extemp Central.

Henry W. Grady’s Rachel Citrin also reached elimination rounds in Lincoln Douglas Debate.  Congratulations Grady!

Riverwood hiring Debate Coach

Riverwood High School (Sandy Springs, GA) Debate Coach Job Opening

Candidate must have significant high school policy debate experience – preferably as a Coach. This is an opportunity to shape a debate program in which there is already strong student interest and strong parental and institutional support.

The successful candidate will be organized, self-motivated, and have an enthusiasm for high school policy debate that he/she can instill in the debate team participants. Experience coaching high school debate and/or significant familiarity with high school policy debate within the past one-three years is a requirement. College debaters are welcome and encouraged to apply but must have debated in high school.

The Debate Coach will be responsible for planning practice debates, teaching, and coaching a high school debate team.  Coaching duties involve holding weekly or biweekly practice debates, advising student research and tournament preparation, and attending 3-4 regional Georgia tournaments. Must have own transportation. This is a paid position.

Alpharetta wins big at the Titan Invitational

This past weekend, Northview High School hosted their first annual Titan Invitational. Woodward Academy is pictured here with two of the Varsity Policy Championship trophies.

Alpharetta HS was clearly a big winner of the tournament, and qualified fifteen individuals in speech events!

Lee County and Marist win the Lincoln County Tournament

This past weekend, 176 students from 12 schools went to the 11th Annual Autumn by the Lake at Lincoln County High School.

Lee County High School won the IE Sweepstakes award, while Marist School won the Debate Sweepstakes Award.

Lincoln County also gives two coach awards. The Chuck Heywood Excellence in Coaching Award was given to James Brock, coach at Houston County High School. The Susan Saxon Dedication in Coaching Award was given to Jeffrey Miller, coach at Marist School.

Stratford Academy wins the Michigan Round Robin

Stratford Academy’s Andrew Jones and Hemanth Sanjeev were named the Champions of the Juniors Round Robin hosted by the University of Michigan.

Pace Academy’s Jordan Epstein & Victor Skenderi were Runner Ups of the Junior Round Robin. Andrew Jones was the top speaker and Hemanth was the 2nd speaker in the Juniors pod.

Chattahoochee’s Will Caplan and Viveth Karthikeyan were the Runner Ups in the Seniors Round Robin, with a 6-1 record. Pace Academy’s Lauren Sukin and Brian Klarman finished 3rd overall.

Woodward reaches semis at Meadows

Woodward Academy was the only Georgia school that traveled to Las Vegas this past weekend for the Meadows School Tournament.

The team of Jason Sigalos & Raheem Shakoor made it to the semifinal round where they were eliminated by the eventual champions from College Prep School (CA).

Jason Sigalos was the 2nd best speaker and Raheem was named 3rd speaker of the tournament.

Georgia wins big at Blue Key

Lee County High School, Roswell High School and Carrollton High School were among many teams across the nation this past weekend at the University of Florida Blue Key Invitational.

In Novice Policy Debate, Roswell’s Shadman Uddin & Nafhan Rice were the top seed.   Carrollton’s Tate Mikels & Aubree  Murchison also reached elimination rounds.

In Varsity Policy Debate, Carrollton’s Tyler Wharton and Josh Michael reached quarterfinals.  Carrollton’s team of Tommy  Jordan  & Lane Bye also reached quarterfinals.  Carrollton’s Tommy Jordan was also named Top Speaker.

In Duo Interpretation, Lee County’s Hugh Slaton & Alan Un reached quarterfinals. In Domestic Extemporaneous, Lee County’s Kyle Constable reached semifinals (marking his second national elimination round appearance this year).    In International Extemporaneous, Carrollton’s Alex Baldwin & Brennan Mancil both reached the quarterfinal round.

Johns Creek breaks at New Trier

Three teams from Johns Creek High School joined a slew of Midwest and Northeast teams at the Annual New Trier Season Opener at New Trier High School in Northfield, Illinois.  For full results, please follow this link.

The team of Chetan Hebbale and Sean Foley reached the octofinal round where they were defeated by Glenbrook North, the eventual champion of the tournament.  Chetan was also named the 11th Speaker.

Grady wins the Gladiator Helmet!

Three hundred and thity six students from twenty seven schools participated in the Gladiator Debates last weekend at Johns Creek High School.

In the final round of Varsity Policy, Henry W. Grady CD (Holden Choi & Ben Dean) defeated Marist School CM (Sydney Chung & Libby Mandarino) for the presitigous Gladiator Helmet!

Westminster wins the Sophomore Hoe Down

Thirty two of the top sophomore policy debate teams in the nation were invited to compete in the St. Marks Sophomore Hoe Down this past weekend.

In the Championship round, Westminster Schools’ Dillon Hall & Colin Basco defeated Pace Academy’s Anshuman Parikh & Erik Howard.

Chattahoochee’s Amar Adam & Sujay Peramanu was also invited to the Round Robin.

Congratulations to all three of these schools on their performances.
