Novice Rules
All first-year competitors (i.e. novice) will only be allowed to use the approved novice evidence packet in competitions.
(1) Novice students may not modify the plan texts.
(2) Novice students will be allowed to update arguments on their own so long as the content of the argument does not change. If any major argument becomes non-unique the GFCA Executive Committee will release a new argument to take its place.
(3) Novice students will be allowed to run topicality arguments, but not theory arguments or specification arguments. Extra topicality and effects topicality arguments will be considered theory and will not be allowed in the novice division.
(4) Novice students may rearrange the organization of evidence but may not add and/or change the content of the arguments in the packet. This means students may find new evidence but not change the fundamental intent of the argument.
(5) Novice policy teams may not run counterplans or kritiks.
(6) A student who has competed in a different forensic activity but is in their first resolution of policy debate is considered a novice.
(e) A student is no longer eligible for competition in the first-year/novice division once they have reached competition in their second year resolution.
(f) There is only one winner in each debate. Judges determine the winner based on argumentation ability, speaking technique, case development, and evidence. Judges score competitors with speaker ranks and points. The team with the higher speaker point total wins the debate, unless indicated by the judge as a low-point win.
(g) Each debater is awarded a maximum of thirty (30) speaker points.

If you have specific questions, feel free to ask – instead of mailing teams the packet, the GFCA has provided the packet available to download.
Thanks!
Thanks, Jeffrey!
I’m brand new to coaching and have a MS Varsity team with some questions. Can anyone answer these?
1. Does affirmative need to pick one case or can you use all the cases?
2. Can you incorporate MS JV evidence?
3. Is SSP and SPS the same argument?
4. Is there a way to get a glossary?
5. Why are there different plans for different cases?
Thanks so much! Have a great day!
Great to have you with us. Here are my opinions, not official, just the opinions of a single coach who has done this for a few years: 1) Pick one only, don’t mix and match. In other words, can’t add cards to 1AC that are not listed as 1AC in the packet, and you can’t take cards from Constellation 1AC and put them in the SSP 1AC; 2) Space Colonies can be run in MS varsity, so yes, you can run evidence from that packet; 3) Yes; 4) No; 5) Because each plan is different depending upon the case. For e.g., you couldn’t solve space colonies by putting up space satellites, you couldn’t solve asteroid mining by doing the Constellation plan.
Thank you so much for your help! My students are so excited to have answers!
